June Round-Up

Warning! This is really long and full of tons of pictures but I realize I’ve been a really bad blogger lately. So, I thought I would do one monthly wrap up post of all of the things we have been doing this month. Summer is definitely keeping us busy. In addition to Meagan’s graduation and graduation party this month, we have done a lot of other things to keep us occupied.

Meagan is working at a local veterinarian office for the summer. She works 3 days a week doing various things at the office. She does everything from cleaning and painting new exam rooms to observing office visits and surgeries. She’s been able to assist with a few things here and there and is really enjoying this time learning about the workings of companion animals and veterinarian offices.

We have season passes to Valleyfair and have been there several times already this summer. This is the first year that Annie’s sensory issues haven’t held her back when it comes to amusement park rides. Actually, this is the first summer that Annie has done a lot of things that she never would do before. She will now swing on the swings, and walk across moving bridges. This progress has made doing an amusement park a possibility this year. We didn’t even attempt it last year because I knew she wouldn’t enjoy herself.

Off in the distance you can kind of make out Annie and Hunter. They were signed up together for a week long program through Park and Rec. It was kind of summer day-camp type program-they played different games, made crafts, and had different activities planned for the kids every day. She had so much fun that we signed up for the second session later in July.

Our Park and Rec Department also puts on an “Art in the Park” event every summer. There are different stations set up with different art projects for the kids and the event is capped off with a puppet show. This is the second summer that we have participated and Annie really likes it.

They have a sidewalk chalk coloring contest. Each child is assigned a square of the sidewalk and can draw whatever they would like. At the end of the day a couple of guys from the fire department come down for the judging. Annie didn’t win this year, but she had fun.

We spend A LOT of time at the pool. I try to arrange my work schedule so that I am able to spend most of the afternoon with Annie and not be cooped up in the house. It usually works that we get to the pool a couple of times a week. We usually meet up with friends and spend the afternoon there.

This is a big year for Annie at the pool. She is finally tall enough and a strong enough swimmer that she can go down the water slide by herself. Our pool rules are that the child must be able to go down the slide alone, without being caught at the bottom by and adult and be able to get themselves out of the water by themselves. I was a nervous wreck the first time I let her try, but she did it and has never looked back. She’s working really hard on becoming a stronger swimmer and can swim short distances on her own on top of, and under the water.

We had a small birthday party at Mike and Angie’s house for my Mom’s birthday. Mike, Angie, Charlotte, Alex, our family and Lauren got together and grilled out and hung out for the afternoon and evening just relaxed. I love just hanging out with my family and wish that we could all do it more often. No agenda, just all of us in one place together.

Oh yeah, we added a new friend to our family. This is Harper. She is a Shih Tzu and today is 9 weeks old. We’ve had her for a week now and are all totally in love. We still miss Charlie a lot and she won’t replace him, but we all missed having a dog in our family and decided that we were ready.

Do you see how red, hot and sweaty she is? It has been HOT HOT HOT here in southern Minnesota!

A day of fun in the sun wipes all of us OUT. This is how I found Annie one evening when I went to get her for dinner. Funny girl!

Annie asks me to take pictures with random things that we find while out and about. This is a restaurant we were at one morning and she jumped in front of these HUGE Vikings and asked for her picture to be taken. And later, in the gift shop area with the Vikings helmet.

Yesterday we were at the grocery store when she hopped in front of this cardboard statue and said, “Take my picture!” She’s such a goofball.

Yesterday was also the Strawberry Festival here in town. Because our spring was so hot and so early this year the strawberry crop really suffered. I was hoping to go pick our own berries this year but there just didn’t seem to be any farms that had enough and it never happened. The festival still took place this year, there just weren’t any strawberries. There were different food and craft booths set up. We walked up and down the street looking but we didn’t stay long. It was so hot yesterday that we were all miserable.

We did hit a couple of rides before we left. I am not a fan of traveling carnivals and usually opt out of participating, but for whatever reason I gave in and let her ride 2 rides.

So, that was June in a nutshell. We’ve been busy enjoying spending the summer together before Meagan heads off to school.

July will find us just as busy. Meagan is volunteering at the Mn Zoo, Annie has a week long cheerleading camp and a day camp at the zoo. Of course we have the 4th of July this week and my birthday this week. We’re planning on spending a day at Canterbury Downs (the horse races) and we’re spending a few days at Mackinac Island in Michigan with my Mom.
